The Village House

Welcome to the Village house, 1,600 square feet with four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, large kitchen/dining area (with all utilities) and sitting room, there is also a large deck at the back for outdoor dining and barbecuing and a garden at the front. The house sleeps about six people. It is a traditional stone village house, probably about 400 years old. It has everything you need for a comfortable stay including broadband internet access. The Kitchen has been refurbished recently and is completely new. There is a garden at the front with plenty of room for sitting, sunbathing and enjoying the breathtaking views of the Ariege.
10 minutes from the house, there are restaurants/ bars, supermarkets, top class bakeries, La Poste etc and there is also a local shop within walking distance. The house is on the road to the famous Château de Montsegur (8km) and just ten minutes walk to the Intermittent Fountain of Fontestorbes. For those of you who like wine, you need look no further, the local appelations are Corbieres (excellent), Minervois, Limoux and Gaillac. A respectable bottle of wine costs two to five euros in this region !

The Village house is situated in the Pays D'Olmes region of the Ariege. The Ariege lies to the south west of Toulouse and rises gradually to the high pyreness (10,000 feet). Bordering both Andorra and Spain, the Ariege is one of the least populated, most unspoilt and beautiful areas of France with an average of 2000 hours of sunshine per year. There are hundreds of walking trails, Cathar castles perched high above breathtaking landscapes, lovely market towns, fascinating markets with sun ripened produce and the aroma of herbs and fresh food. There are rolling hills, green valleys and rocky gorges with hidden villages. Traditional farming methods have insured an abundance of wild flowers and a large number of different species of butterfly. Orchids and birds of prey thrive here. In Autumn wild fruit appears everywhere.

This beautiful area has stunning views both summer and winter….. a delight for cyclists and walkers or for those who just want to soak up the scenery. In wintertime, there are several ski stations nearby suitable for beginners and the more experienced. There are several thermal spas all within an hour’s drive. The historic towns of Foix and Mirepoix are just half an hour away.Nearby is lovely Lac Montbel, a 20 hectare lake suitable for swimming on those long hot days with a nearby cafe for refreshments and there are also watersports facilities, also in the area are many pre historic caves including a fascinating subtarranean river with boat trips throughout the day For children who may need a vigorous outlet, there is go-karting just 15 minutes away together with Crazy Golf and also horseriding. Other amusements include the prehistoric park and the Wolf park. The Mediterranean sea is just two hours away with many beautiful beaches and resorts.

For those who like to shop, Toulouse is an hour and a half’s drive (or simply take the train from Foix).
and tax-free Andorra is the the same distance away through the mountains. The famous Mountain village of Rennes Le Chateau (Holy Blood and Holy Grail, Da Vinci Code, Labrynth) which attracts 100,000 visitors a year is also nearby with its famous Church of Mary Magdelain

The local airport is Carcassonne (one hour away) and there are daily flights from Shannon, Dublin and some five UK airports including Stansted and Liverpool. Car rental is available at Carcassonne. Other airports within reach are Perpignan and Toulouse (both about 2 hours). There are many great flight deals with Ryanair especially when booked early.
